Plante-Marquis Twin Barns

The farmland located at 850 Highway 101 North in St-Bruno-de-Guigues was cleared by Jean‑Baptiste Guimond in the early 1900s. He and his wife Marie-Jeanne Paquin had 13 children. In 1949, their son Léodor marries Auréa Côté and takes over the farm. At that time, the Guimond family lived on subsistence farming. A first barn (triangular attic) is built on the lot, and in the 1940s and 1950s, a second barn (French roof) is erected to provide for the needs of the growing family.

Around 1960–1965, the buildings are converted for dairy production, which would ensure business all year round. At the time, the barn’s ground floor was used as a cowshed; hay and straw were stored on the upper floor. Alain Guimond, son of Léodor, relates that in the barn’s attic was a water tank from which water could be pumped out thanks to a windmill. Located at such a height, the reservoir—which could hold about 2000 gallons of water—could feed the cattle drinking troughs by gravity. As none of Léodor and Auréa’s seven children seemed interested in taking over the farm in the short term, the couple sells the property in 1976 and moves to the village.

The farm is sold to Viateur Bégin and Denis Charette, who partner under the name Béchar, to expand their dairy farming operations.

In 1992, the farm is bought back by Bernard Plante and Josée Marquis, the current owners, who now operate a cattle farm. The barns have thus been converted into a machinery shed and covered with sheet metal to ensure they stand the test of time.
