Clarital Twin Barns
The land owned by Chantal Drouin and Claude Bournival was opened up by Georges Trudel, who arrived in Laverlochère in 1910. Mr. Trudel built a farm on the land in the early 1920s. In 1946, Victorin, Mr. Trudel’s son, takes over the farm before selling it to Édouard Bournival in 1955. Two years later, Édouard Bournival transfers ownership of the farmland to his brother Sylvio, who sells the property—in 1963—to his son Gérard and Claudette Rocheleau, parents of the current owner. It is then that the farm was converted primarily into a dairy farm. The pig pens are turned into accommodations for the calves, and the stable also has a new function. In the mid-1980s, Chantal and Claude, who are increasingly involved in the business, undertake to renovate the barns. An extension is built to house the heifers, and the windows are replaced by ventilation systems, etc. In 1988, Chantal and Claude officially buy the farm and continue to operate it to this day.
One of the particularities of the farm is the face-to-face arrangement of the cows in the alley. At the time, it was more practical to bring the hay down from the barn attic into the alley and to feed the cows directly. Usually, lactating cows are positioned back-to-back, which is less demanding for milkers.
